While I am not optimistic enough to think this represents a complete end to dodgy media tycoons' holds over British politicians, I cannot help but reduce at the news that potentially the entire Houses of Parliament are today to pass a motion condemning Murdoch's BSkyB bid. If someone had told David Cameron two weeks ago that he would be supporting an Opposition motion (itself an incredibly unusual event) to so unabashedly criticise the Murdochs he would probably have laughed in your face.
I entirely welcome these events and in particular Ed Miliband's brave stand against News International last week amid very disturbing threats. See here a brilliant article by Polly Toynbee for the Guardian about this matter. I only hope that this means the beginning of the end of Murdoch's terrifyingly close relationships to leaders of all parties (except, to their credit, the Liberal Democrats). Furthermore, let's see an increase in respect for Miliband - who looks weak now?
